John William Samek, 89, of Graham

SAMEK-JOHN-WILLIAMGRAHAM, KY., — John William Samek, 89, of Graham passed away on Monday morning, December 24, 2018 at 12:14am at Western KY Veterans Center after a long illness. He was born on March 7, 1929 in Gainesville, Texas the son of John and Myrtle Samek. He grew up on a cattle and dairy farm and raised hogs and sheep for FFA in high school. He graduated from Era High School in 1947 and he enlisted in the USMC the next day. He went to North Texas State University and graduated with an MBA in business administration and finance and worked in New York City on Wall Street as a securities analyst specializing in airline stocks for several years. In 1976 he became the owner-operator of Elk Creek Hogs, a hog production facility in Greenville which was destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1980. He worked at GE in Madisonville heading up its security division for 17 years retiring in 2004 and was a member of Pennyroyal Master Gardeners in Madisonville for 10 years. He loved gardening and raised vegetables and herbs. He sold plants at the yearly Garden Fair for Master Gardeners at the UK extension service location in Madisonville. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, SAR which is an organization that traces a man’s family back to a soldier in the American Revolution.

He was the youngest staff sergeant in the Marine Corps stationed in Guam and Hawaii and was honorably discharged attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Samek, Jr., brother Joseph Samek, and sister Edna Barker.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Barbara Green Samek of Graham, 2 sons Jeffrey Samek of Madisonville and Daniel (Mitzi) Samek of Spring Hill, TN., 4 grandsons Elijah and Isaiah Samek of Greenville, Jared and Landon Samek of Spring Hill, TN., brother Charles (Donna) Samek of Valley View, TX., sister Theresa Stevens of Gainesville, TX.

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Friday, December 28 at 2pm at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville, KY conducted by Bro. Nick Holeman and eulogies will be given by sons Jeff and Daniel Samek. Interment will be in the Western Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Hopkinsville.

Visitation will be after 12noon until time of service at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville.
