Harold Edward (Truck) Evitts

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, KY - Harold Edward (Truck) Evitts, age 80, of Greenville passed away suddenly Saturday night, May 1, 2010, in the Muhlenberg Community Hospital emergency room.

“Truck” was born in Luzerne to Henry Forrest "Ras" Evitts and Minnie Farmer Evitts. Truck was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville and he was an Army veteran of the Korean War, where he was a tank driver, and he also served in Germany. Truck retired in 1990 from P&M Coal Co. after working 40 years as a UMWA coal miner. He was a 50-year member of Pond River Masonic Lodge No. 244 and he was a life member of VFW Post No. 5478, where he served as post commander, and Truck was Kentucky state commander of the VFW in 1978. Truck was an honorary Kentucky Colonel and he was an avid Kentucky Wildcat fan. He pitched and played for many baseball teams in Muhlenberg County and he also coached Little League baseball in the county.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Timothy Van Evitts, in 1989; a sister, Joyce Loughry Richardson, in 1985; and a brother, Gene Evitts, in 2008.

Truck is survived by his wife of 59 years, Leona Morris Evitts of Greenville; two sons, Chris Evitts of Greenville and Shane Evitts of Greenville; a granddaughter, Stephanie (Paul) Ledure of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; two great-grandsons, Trent Ledure and Parker Ledure; two sisters, Phyllis (Billy) Jarvis of Greenville and Glenda Stirsman of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at Gary's Funeral Home, Greenville, by the Rev. Walter Evitts, with burial to follow with military honors at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Powderly. Masonic services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Gary's Funeral Home, by Pond River Lodge No. 244. Friends may call Tuesday after 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
