Virgil Stanley Jr., 90, of Greenville


GREENVILLE, KY., — Virgil Stanley Jr., 90, of Greenville passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 11:30am at his home after a lengthy illness.  Virgil was born March 9, 1927 in Depoy, KY, the son of Virgil Stanley, Sr. and Lila Stanley.  He was a UMWA coal miner and worked for Peabody Coal Company.  He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and served in Germany.  Virgil was proud to be a member of Pond River Masonic Lodge #244 and the Rizpah Shriners in Madisonville, KY, and he was also a member of South Carrollton Missionary Baptist Church and a Kentucky Colonel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Louise Stanley, on Sept. 15, 2014; and by his children Ruby Stanley, Shelia Scott, Richard Stanley, and Larry Stanley.

Virgil was survived by three sons David (Kathy) Stanley of Crown Pointe, IN, Danny (Faye) Stanley of Greenville, KY, and Lee Roy (Gail) Stanley of Greenville, KY, one daughter Linda (Robert) Davis of Graham, KY, 16 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning May 1, 2017 at 11am at Gary’s Funeral Home by Rev. Greg Brooks. Burial with military honors and Coal miner service will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, at Depoy, KY. 

Masonic services and Legion of Honor Services will be Sunday night, April 30 at 6pm at Gary’s Funeral home.

Visitation will be Sunday April 30, 2017 from 5pm until 8pm at Gary’s Funeral Home in Greenville, KY.
